Live Cattle - 2003 Mad Cow Scare
Late in December of 2003, the Live Cattle market was hit with a Mad Cow scare. The market had a tremendous run throughout
the year due to strong demand in large part from Atkins Diets. Once the case of Mad Cow was released, the markets plummeted in a
series of limit down moves that dropped the cattle market about 20 cents in 5 days. A thought of a severe drop in demand was the
reason for the move along with Japan cancelling imports of our beef. However, after the dust settled, demand from US consumers
didn't drop very much and the market had a nice rebound.
